Committee members said the draft calendar provides 70 student contact days and 90 certified work days. Members discussed keeping a teacher training day on a Friday in February after Kimberly Bonner withdrew an earlier request to move that date; Bonner reported informal feedback that the training-day placement did not have the negative impact she had expected and that staff found the Friday training refreshing. The committee voted to approve the minutes and the calendar by voice/thumb vote and agreed to send the draft to district staff (Linda) for agenda scheduling.
Members also discussed operational details and minor edits to the calendar: adding Kindergarten first day on Sept. 8, deciding whether to document a shorter “kindergarten jump start” held in August (the committee previously chose to leave that off official calendars), correcting the sequencing of staggered first days for some grades (the first/second/third day ordering was corrected), and labeling a high-school student-support day in April to match October conference-day language. Staff reported that state OSAS testing training and any related updates typically are not available from the state before Nov. 1; that timing limits the district’s ability to change certain testing dates for the coming school year.
The committee considered—but did not reach consensus on—creating separate secondary and elementary calendars and on adding professional-development days without reducing student contact days; those items were not included in the approved draft. Melissa Bunting asked for different representation for the 2026–27 calendar conversation, noting she no longer represents the majority of staff in regular classrooms; committee members agreed representation should reflect classroom staff for testing and training discussions.
Next steps: the committee will send the draft calendar and amended minutes to district administration (Linda) in draft form for inclusion on an upcoming board agenda, likely in March, and committee members asked staff to make the spreadsheet edits discussed before submission. The meeting adjourned after the approvals.
