Board appoints high-school math curriculum review committee as district expands advanced middle-school math

The board voted to appoint a 10-member community curriculum-review committee to advise the district’s planned high-school math adoption and received an update on progress of the multi-year math initiative.

Under policy IIA and its administrative regulation, staff said the district needed a community review committee of at least five members; the board appointed 10 volunteers. The motion to appoint the committee passed on roll call with all board members voting yes.

Separately, district staff outlined three pillars of the math initiative: professional development for teachers, vertical alignment of standards and scope-and-sequence (K–12), and matching curriculum resources to classroom needs. Staff highlighted recent successes: middle-school students who competed at regional math competitions won group and grade-level awards, and the district has increased pathways to advanced high-school math by offering more advanced middle-school classes in-house next year.

Staff credited sustained summer academies ("math camp" beginning in 2021), ongoing trainer support and classroom walkthroughs with improving results. Trustees discussed scheduling challenges and placement processes; staff said they have met with fifth-grade teachers and will continue placement and transition meetings prior to the next school year.

The board’s appointment of the curriculum-review committee was recorded as a formal action; staff said the committee will attend presentations of proposed high-school math materials and provide feedback to the board before any adoption vote.
