Redmond SD 2J board reviews 2025–26 draft calendar, keeps construction contingency for Redmond High

Redmond School District 2J officials reviewed a draft 2025–26 academic calendar and discussed contingency plans for construction at Redmond High School.

The draft retains a post–Labor Day start, and ends the school year on June 11, with a week after the last day reserved for make-up days. District staff said they considered shifting the whole district schedule to allow two weeks of construction at Redmond High but decided not to change the full district calendar at this time. Instead, staff proposed holding additional instructional time in the last trimester and the option of using online instruction at Redmond High for up to two weeks if needed.

The calendar presented keeps a mix of in-service and teacher work days in August, a separate kindergarten attendance day in August, parent conferences in October and November, a two-week winter break in December, and standard holidays such as Veterans Day and Presidents Day. Elementary conferences are scheduled in November and again before spring break; middle-school conferences will include a student-led format in April and high-school conferences will be limited because of low attendance in past years.

District staff also reviewed state-required contact hours by grade level. The presentation listed the statutory baseline and the calendar’s computed hours: kindergarten (required 900 hours; calendar: 943.58 hours), first grade (required 900; calendar: 1,000.25), second–third grades (required 900; calendar: 915.95), fourth–fifth grades (required 900; calendar: 955.95), middle school (required 900; calendar: 1,005.2), grades 9–11 (required 990; calendar: 1,034.5), and 12th grade (required 926; calendar: 968.4). A district staff member said the draft “meets” statutory requirements.

On Redmond High construction, staff described ongoing work to hire a construction manager and said negotiations with contractors and the union may be required if the district later decides to alter schedules or working conditions for Redmond High staff. District staff emphasized they have not finalized those plans and are leaving the calendar flexible so changes can be negotiated if necessary.

Board members asked follow-up questions about conference formats, enforcement of parent–teacher event attendance, and how contact hours were calculated. The board did not take formal votes on the calendar during the work session; staff said the calendar would be presented again at a regular board meeting for action.

For now the calendar remains a draft; the district will return to the board with any negotiated changes tied to the Redmond High construction schedule and will present the calendar for formal approval at a subsequent meeting.
