Local training program showcases lead‑abatement and trades joint venture for Detroit youth

A Detroit youth and family services nonprofit told the council it has launched a joint venture to train local young people in lead inspection, lead abatement and construction trades.

Mel Polk said he represented No Barriers to Success and introduced Richard Harrison of Choice Property Services and trainee D'Amonte Redman. Harrison described the joint venture as a lead inspection, lead risk assessment, lead abatement and home‑improvement firm that is training local residents in carpentry, painting, masonry and drywall. Trainees stood in the chamber during public comment; D'Amonte Redman described his experience, saying the program “cultivates leadership, builds community wealth” and lists services the cohort can offer including interior renovation, HVAC, electrical, plumbing and exterior repairs.

Council member Angela Whitfield Callaway later recognized the program during general public comments, saying graduates were present and that she has discussed a training pathway with Wayne County Community College President Ira to create a cohort and inspection training at the college. Callaway said the group had purchased equipment to detect lead and that the graduates will be formally acknowledged at a later council meeting.

Ending: Councilmembers thanked the group for the training initiative and said they would coordinate with workforce and community college partners to help graduates translate training into paid inspection and remediation work.
