Downtown Detroit Partnership previews summer events, park renovations and vendor opportunities

The Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) presented to Detroit City Council on plans for the upcoming summer events season and ongoing upgrades to downtown public spaces.
David Cowen, chief public spaces officer at the Downtown Detroit Partnership, told the council DDP manages 18 public spaces under a longstanding agreement with the city and produces roughly 1,200 events annually, 95% of which are free and open to the public. Cowen said the organization saw a 32% increase in opening‑day attendance at Grand Circus Park this year and that the summer lineup includes movie nights, wellness programs, large concerts and family events timed with the Detroit Grand Prix weekend.
Cowen said vendor applications are open on a rolling basis and that DDP gives application preference to Detroit‑based, women‑owned and minority‑owned vendors. He also briefed council on park capital work underway: Capitol Park and Paradise Valley Park were both receiving furniture, trees, wifi upgrades and other amenities and were scheduled to be ready in time for summer programming. Cowen said the DDP funds events through philanthropy, corporate partners and earned revenue and urged council offices to share the vendor application with interested constituents.
During Q&A Council member Leticia Johnson asked specifically for the vendor application; DDP committed to provide the application and to accept applications on a rolling basis. Council members thanked DDP for cultural programming support and affirmed the city’s partnership role.
