South Lyon fire chief reports training milestones, grant denial for truck

Fire Chief Thornton told the City Council on April 14 that the South Lyon Fire Department has handled 412 incidents so far in 2025 and recently assisted Green Oak Fire with a garage fire.
Thornton said Captain Solvay completed the NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor II certification, which the chief described as a rigorous course that will allow the department to run live-burn training that meets state regulations.
Thornton also reported on a federal grant application: "...our $509,000 for the fire truck that we received, that grant, we received, the grant, we officially received notice from the Senator Slotkin's office that did not make the next budget for the federal government," he said. Thornton said the department will reapply next fiscal year and noted that Senator Tom Barrett's office had been in contact to assist.
Councilmembers thanked the department for rapid emergency response in a recent fallen-tree incident that blocked access on Pontiac Trail and asked about preparations for the department open house; Thornton said preparations are "going excellent."
