District 1 leaders schedule Brightmoor side‑lot update; DPSCD to discuss $3 million Cooley site grant

President Pro Tem James Tate said residents at the District 1 evening meeting will hear a presentation from the Detroit Land Bank Authority on its side‑lot program for Brightmoor and an update from Detroit Public Schools Community District on plans for the former Cooley site, which the district received about $3 million in grant funding to revitalize the playground and field.

Tate, introducing his staff and agenda items, described Brightmoor as “the jewel in our cap” for District 1 and said the land bank presentation will include information on properties released by the water department and other vacant parcels. He asked residents to attend a forthcoming session where the land bank will explain next steps and how neighbors might participate.

About the former Cooley site, Tate said Detroit Public Schools Community District “received, about $3,000,000 worth of grant funding to revitalize the playground and field at the former Cooley site.” He said the district will present what it plans to do at the former Cooley site and provide updates on other district real estate across Detroit.

Tate also showed a new city council district map and told residents the new District 1 boundary is smaller and denser, urging greater participation in the census to protect representation and funding. “Please keep in mind we are the most densely populated district in the city of Detroit. So we're the smallest,” he said.

No formal council action or vote was recorded on these items at the meeting; Tate scheduled further public sessions and district satellite hours for more detailed briefings.
