Marshalltown students and Bobcat Cafe earn statewide recognition; district highlights national qualifiers

The Marshalltown Community School District honored a series of student achievements and recognized the student-run Bobcat Cafe during the April 7 board meeting.
The districtcommunications department received multiple awards from the Iowa School Public Relations Association for photography and public engagement work. Marshalltown High School quiz-bowl competitors were recognized after finishing runner-up at the Iowa Quiz Bowl League state championships. Individual student achievements included two All-State speech qualifiers and multiple National History Day and state science fair qualifiers; one student earned a trip to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair.
Representatives from the districtIJAG (Iowa Jobs for America's Graduates) program described winning a state competition and qualifying for nationals; students explained their preliminary project (healthier snacks and a female-focused free vending machine for locker rooms) and described the national competition invitation.
FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) teacher Sandra Tracy reported that a student, Helen Schur, earned a silver medal in career investigation and qualified for nationals; Adrianna won a gold medal in the job-interview event.
The board also recognized the Bobcat Cafe, a student-run café housed at the Orpheum venue that provides hands-on experience in hospitality, food preparation and customer service. Jules McGrew, who runs the program, and student participants described morning and second-shift operations, community partnerships (including local businesses and the police department) and a product lineup led by a student-made breakfast burrito and top-selling baked goods.
Elementary students from the XLP Writers Workshop read award-winning essays for the American Legion contest on "What the Flag Means to Me." Board members praised the students and acknowledged the range of extracurricular success across the district.
The recognitions were presented without formal board action. The items were included in the meeting as part of the recognitions and reports section.
