Presentation and funding: Wilkins Principal Amanda Potter and student representatives presented the project. Fourth grader Liam and kindergartner Hudson described the student selection process; staff said every child and adult at Wilkins had the opportunity to choose among three playground options via a Google form and that the students selected “option three.” Potter said the Wilkins PTO raised funds beginning last school year and placed the funds in a certificate of deposit that will mature in May and be available for the project. Potter also said the playground sits on City of Marion property and that city officials agreed to partner on funding and allow the district to place the new playground on the park land.
Board action: Director Laura moved to approve the planned specifications for the Wilkins Elementary Playground Project; Director Melissa seconded. The board called for a voice vote and the motion carried unanimously.
What’s next: With board approval of specifications, staff indicated the district will proceed with procurement and scheduling. The district said the Pearl fund and other district resources will cover the district’s share; the transcript indicates the Pearl fund is one source of playground funding for the district.
Student voice: “We are students from Wilkins Elementary and we are here to give you a playground update,” student presenter Liam told the board. He said the students appreciated being able to vote on the design and to suggest improvements.
