A health and welfare representative told the commission the county extended free pet adoptions through April in an effort to reduce shelter population and encouraged use of the policy to help manage animals in the county shelter.
The commission also directed that a maintenance vehicle currently in county fleet service be assigned to the animal control facility. Officials said the vehicle is a 2022 Ford with approximately 15,000 miles and that the county will seek to purchase a cargo box for the trucks bed. The vehicle reassignment and equipment purchase will come before the budget/finance committee for approval of funds already appropriated for vehicle purchases.
The health and welfare speaker said the maintenance vehicle has been used by staff and that formalizing its assignment will provide a dedicated vehicle for animal-control operations. The commission accepted the health and welfare report during the meeting; the vehicle reassignment will be finalized through the budget process, the speaker said.
No specific dollar amount for the box purchase or a budget line item was provided during the meeting; staff said the purchase will be presented to the finance committee with existing appropriations.
