Junior-high student urges district to start recycling program at junior high

Sophie Seamer, an eighth‑grade student at the junior high, told the board she researched a recycling program as a class “passion project” and asked the administration to help move the idea forward.

Seamer said she spoke with staff, including Mr. Pekin, and learned the district has multiple recycling bins but no contractor currently collects recycling from the junior high, so most materials end up at the landfill. She said she prepared a detailed plan but could not complete the project because she did not receive the administrative responses and approval needed to implement collection and hauling.

Seamer asked trustees to support student efforts to expand recycling across district schools; she said she planned to continue the project beyond the class requirement and hoped the board and administration would help with logistics and approvals. The board thanked Seamer for her presentation and noted that public comment items can raise ideas for staff follow‑up.
