Equity Council hears LTMS naming recommendation will go to school board

The Equity Council Committee of the Fayette County Board of Education heard an update April 1 that the LTMS naming team has narrowed its options and will present one name to the school board for consideration and approval.
The committee was told the naming process had narrowed a longer list to five finalists. The five names identified in the meeting record were Manny Caulk Middle School; East End Middle School; Helen Case Wade Middle School; Lewis and Harriet Hayden Middle School; and Lexington Middle School. The presenter said one of those five will move forward as the recommendation to the Board of Education.
Members who attended the community forum and student presentations described students’ participation in the naming process and noted the historical significance of several finalists. Committee members highlighted that one finalist, Helen Case Wade, is reportedly still living and that student presenters and community members had spoken in favor of naming a school after someone who can attend and speak to the school community’s history.
The council did not take a formal vote on the name at the April 1 meeting. Council members were told a single recommendation will be brought to the Fayette County Board of Education for formal consideration and possible approval at a future board meeting.
Background provided at the meeting said the LTMS team worked with the district family and community engagement office to solicit feedback and to narrow the list prior to the board recommendation.
