Board hears recommendation to adopt CLET world-language materials; seven-year cost $149,588.83

District staff presented a recommendation on April 14 to adopt a new instructional resource for world languages in grades 6–12, with the committee endorsing CLET after year-long pilot work.
Doctor Putnam Jackson, who presented the proposal, said the adoption timeline and committee process included teacher pilots, building feedback and a parent/community review. The committee piloted resources from Wayside Publishers and CLET and recommended CLET based on classroom experience. Staff reported the total projected cost for the seven-year license cycle is $149,588.83.
According to the presentation, the committee favored CLET for several reasons: an engaging student text, flexible online and print integration, LMS compatibility and grade-pass-back capability, built-in vocabulary practice and frequent formative checks so teachers do not have to wait for unit tests to know whether students are grasping material. The materials also include project-based activities with opportunities for revision.
The board discussed the proposal and asked questions; staff said the item will return to the board for formal action at a subsequent meeting. The committee that led the pilot was chaired by Ms. Kelly Kidderman, who guided selection and piloting in buildings.
