Superintendent’s report to the Jamestown Public School Board on April 7 included a detailed update on the retirement of Washington Elementary, steps the district is taking to manage the transition, and community events to honor the school’s legacy.
The district sent notification letters to Washington families and published a frequently asked questions document in a resource center maintained by the district’s technology department. District leadership has identified roughly 50 tasks related to retiring a building; categories include asset management and facility planning, moving and storage, technology and equipment, records and documentation, classroom furnishings, legacy items, communication, and financial asset reporting.
Staff highlighted teacher Emma Mickelson for organizing farewell activities: a community open house and a last-day event. Mickelson also helped with local fundraising to support the events. The superintendent said the district has produced a series of short videos—four stakeholders answering three questions—intended to explain why Washington was retired, why now is the right time to address facility needs, and what options have been identified; three videos were posted at the time of the meeting and the district recorded roughly 20 segments for the resource center.
The superintendent said the retirement process is ongoing and that more details and event dates would be provided in future reports. Board members expressed appreciation for the videos and for community fundraising and indicated they wanted meeting invitations for farewell events.
