Superintendent reports rising kindergarten counts, teacher negotiations and mascot renaming timeline

Superintendent Marcus Luton updated the Dickinson Public School District board on enrollment, negotiations, accreditation and graduation logistics during his superintendent’s report.
Luton said the district currently has 241 kindergarteners enrolled and that the district expects total kindergarten enrollment to reach about 300 by the start of next school years; he added that the district has 19 kindergarten sections planned. He said the district improved class balancing this year compared with prior years.
Luton told the board that teacher and administrator negotiations began this week and that the board would hold an executive session after the meeting to discuss financials and negotiation strategy. He also noted that the legislature has amended bill 1369 to “be 3 and 3,” while the governor’s budget had proposed “2 and 2,” and that many groups have been lobbying on education funding since the 2013 funding formula change.
On other items, Luton said Dickinson High School graduation is scheduled for May 25 at 1 p.m.; Southwest Community High School’s ceremony is scheduled for May 21 at 7 p.m., and the district expects its largest graduating class ever at Southwest with about 28 students. He said the district completed its final Cognia accreditation paperwork and posted updates about the high school rebuild and mascot process on the district website; more than 850 submissions were received for possible replacement names.
Luton closed by inviting trustees and staff to the employee appreciation open house on May 7 to honor retirees and milestone employees. The board received the report; no formal action was taken during this item.
