Swampscott hires Sarah Kent as director of teaching and learning; starts July 1

The Swampscott School Committee on March 13 announced the selection of Sarah Kent as the district’s new director of teaching and learning. Kent, who will begin full time on July 1, was present at the meeting and described plans for a transition period before she assumes full duties.

Why it matters: The director of teaching and learning oversees curriculum, professional development and academic programming; the hire follows a three‑round interview process and aims to support district improvement and continuity.

The committee said Kent was the finalist after three rounds of interviews and a final panel that included Superintendent Angelakis (absent), Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations Cheryl Stella, Director of Human Resources Miss Kolts and committee members. Committee chair Glenn Pastor introduced Kent and read a biography noting more than 25 years in education, including roles as chief academic officer and assistant superintendent in Waltham and 23 years in leadership in Chelsea.

Sarah Kent said she is "thrilled to be here" and described herself as a curriculum specialist who "likes classrooms and books and kids," adding that she prioritizes student voice, engagement and data‑informed decision making. Kent said she looks forward to a transition plan and to meeting staff across the district before July.

Committee members welcomed Kent and praised her record. One committee member, Amy, said a former colleague had called Kent "the best person that she's ever worked with, hands down." The committee also discussed transition planning to arrange meetings and staff introductions so Kent can "hit the ground running," according to the committee.

Ending: Kent will start full time July 1; the committee said it will finalize a transition schedule with district staff and present Kent at future meetings.
