Beaverton SD 48J and bargaining representatives reviewed proposed edits to Article 20 (tuition reimbursement) intended to modernize language and remove administrative hurdles.
District staff said they accepted the bargaining team’s suggestion to use the term “course” rather than “class” and to explicitly include certifications and recertifications in the kind of training eligible for reimbursement. Draft language would allow reimbursement for certification or recertification fees (examples discussed included paraeducator credentials and certain certification exams) and would continue to reference a separate memorandum of understanding (MOU) that describes program details that may change over time.
The district and union discussed deadlines for claims and proof of successful completion. Current language required submission of claims by June 30 of the fiscal year and a separate grade/transcript deadline of Oct. 1; district staff proposed removing the Oct. 1 grade deadline because modern electronic records typically arrive sooner and the separate date may add an unnecessary administrative barrier. The district said it would consult the tuition‑reimbursement team for any operational reasons to preserve the October deadline and would retain the June 30 fiscal‑year claim deadline.
No final agreement was recorded; negotiators agreed to review the MOU references and the possible removal of the Oct. 1 requirement.
