The Lewis Central Community School District board opened a public hearing under Iowa Code 26.12 to present bid documents for two roof-replacement projects at the high school and middle school.
District staff walked the board through the publicly posted bid documents and plans, describing two separate packages: a high-school roof replacement covering roughly 41,000 square feet and a middle-school partial replacement covering about 11,000 square feet. Staff said the district will accept separate bids for each package but allow a bidder to offer a discount if awarded both contracts. Estimated project costs presented at the hearing were roughly $800,000 for the high school and $250,000 for the middle school; staff emphasized those are estimates and final prices will depend on bids.
Bid documents were posted on the district website and in three statewide plan rooms, staff said: the Iowa Association of School Boards posting area, the A&D Technical Supply plan room, and the Master Builders of Iowa plan room. Staff said bids will be due March 7, with bid openings to be held publicly at a date and time the district will publish; board review and award were scheduled for subsequent meetings.
The hearing was opened to public comment. No members of the public spoke on-site or online, and the district adjourned the public-hearing portion of the meeting with no public input recorded. The board did not take award action at this meeting; staff said they would review bids when received and bring recommendations to the board for approval at a later date.
Documents presented at the hearing described installer and manufacturer warranty expectations (two-year installer, 20-year manufacturer warranties), required bid bonds and submittals, and performance requirements for joints and sealants. Staff also noted the district found much of the existing roof to be in good condition and that the work being bid focuses on specific areas highlighted in the plans.
The public hearing was held as part of the regular board meeting; staff encouraged prospective bidders to consult the posted specifications and to attend the public bid opening.
