ECISD outlines multi-pronged talent pipeline: apprenticeships, residency and leadership development

ODESSA, Texas — Ector County Independent School District staff described a multi-pronged human-capital strategy Feb. 18 designed to recruit, certify and retain teachers, counselors and campus leaders through apprenticeships, residency programs, leadership pathways and expanded onboarding.
Dr. Scott Root, executive director of talent development, told trustees the department has focused on growing in-district pipelines including Future Teachers of Odessa (high-school pathways tied to career and technical education coursework), a registered teacher-apprentice program that currently includes about 70 paraprofessionals working toward teacher certification, the Odessa Pathway to Teaching in-district certification program, and a year-long paid teacher residency in partnership with the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and Odessa College.
Root said Odessa Pathway to Teaching has certified 16 teachers over the past three years, has 25 candidates currently enrolled and anticipates 24 additional candidates next year. The…
