Beck County Independent School District trustees named Dr. Katie Boyer the district's sole finalist for superintendent following a closed-session interview on Feb. 7, 2025.
The action came after an earlier vote during the same special meeting to postpone agenda item A so trustees could have additional time and attempt to have all seven members present. Board members recessed into closed session at about 6:05 p.m. under Texas Government Code Section 551.074 to interview superintendent candidates and returned to open session at about 7:27 p.m., at which time trustees moved to name Dr. Boyer the sole finalist and the motion carried unanimously.
Why it matters: Naming a sole finalist narrows the pool to one candidate the board intends to advance. The board’s discussion showed members were divided about timing, with at least one trustee asking that votes on the matter be delayed until all trustees could attend and raising procedural concerns about the meeting posting.
Trustees debated postponement before going into closed session. President Estancia asked to be present for any vote, saying, "I ask that I be allowed to be present when we make any such vote." Other trustees said they wanted more time to review materials and ensure full participation. A motion to move item A to a later meeting was made and seconded; the board then recessed for the closed interview session.
After the closed session, a trustee moved to name Dr. Katie Boyer as the sole finalist for superintendent. Trustees voted in the open session to approve the naming; the board announced the motion carried unanimously. The meeting then adjourned.
The board identified the closed-session authority for personnel deliberation as Texas Government Code Section 551.074; the meeting notice also referenced compliance with the Texas open meetings statute under Section 551.001. The board did not provide further details in open session about the superintendent contract terms, start date, or next procedural steps for final selection or public notice.
