Frenship ISD reports gains in AP participation and gifted-and-talented enrollment

Nicholas Copeland, coordinator for advanced academics and gifted and talented for Frenship ISD, told trustees that the district’s Advanced Placement program grew in both volume and success in 2023–24.
Copeland said 60% of the district’s AP test-takers scored a 3 or above, a 12-percentage-point increase from the prior year. The district administered 1,067 AP exams, up from 897, and the district average AP score rose to 2.8. “Last year was an incredible year for our advanced placement program,” Copeland said.
On gifted and talented programs at the elementary level, Copeland said the district’s GT enrollment increased from 8.4% to 9.07% of the district. He described the elementary GT model as a weekly pull-out in which students receive STEAM-themed enrichment lessons.
Looking ahead, Copeland said Frenship will offer the same course catalog at the new Memorial High School as at the existing high school and stressed the need to hire and train staff to sustain AP and dual-credit offerings. He also urged outreach to increase GT referrals and ensure potential students are not overlooked.
Trustees did not take formal action on the report; board members offered verbal praise and asked no substantive follow-up in the recorded transcript.
