Fate council holds strategic planning workshop; staff to refine priorities for March follow-up

Fate held a special City Council strategic planning workshop on Feb. 24, 2025, to review principles of good governance, report progress on last year's priorities and identify focus areas the council should refine before a follow-up session next month, the consultant and city staff said.

The workshop, led by facilitator Hillary Shine of SGR, opened with a review of governance principles and a call for the council to center policy-setting, transparency and long-term planning. "We want to focus on those areas where there are particular differences and see if we can come to some commonalities for the long term future of Fate as a community," Shine said.

The session matters because Fate is still growing: staff reported new commercial activity, a larger budget and pressure on public-safety and infrastructure services, all of which factor into choices about taxes, staffing and capital spending.

City Manager Michael Wright presented a progress report on the council's strategic priorities from the prior year and on operational items. Wright said the city has three open public-safety positions and that the budget includes authorization for a detective position scheduled to start on April 1. "We do have 3 positions open for public safety officers," Wright said, and added that hiring for firefighters has gone well.
