Fate council backs Collin County emergency services district in ETJ area
Summary
Council voted 7–0 to support Collin County’s request to form an emergency services district covering unincorporated areas and parts of Fate’s extraterritorial jurisdiction to help fund fire and EMS response in eastern Collin County.
City staff and the chief of public safety briefed the council on April 7 about a Collin County proposal to form an emergency services district (ESD) that would cover unincorporated areas and portions of Fate’s extraterritorial jurisdiction. The council voted to support the district.
Staff said the county is notifying affected municipalities and that an ESD could levy property or sales taxes, depending on the district design and citizen votes, to fund fire apparatus, personnel or EMS subsidies. The council was told the ESD would primarily help neighboring Royce City Fire Department operations in areas north of Fate’s city limits and is not expected to materially increase Fate’s fiscal burden in the near term.
Chiefs and staff said the region currently relies on mutual aid arrangements and that an ESD could provide a stable funding source for county-area responses. Council voted 7–0 in favor of supporting the formation of an emergency services district in Collin County’s unincorporated area adjacent to Fate.
No changes to Fate tax rates or service responsibilities were approved at the meeting; the motion was a formal expression of support for the county’s formation request.
