GARE chooses Ithaca as one stop on regional race-equity tour; local planning underway for October

Tompkins County’s chief equity officer said the Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE) visited Ithaca for two days and identified the community as a preferred stop on a regional meeting scheduled for Oct. 20–22.
Charlene Holmes said GARE’s local visit included community meet-and-greets and internal county meetings and that GARE representatives called Ithaca “one of their favorite” stops on a tour that also included Boulder, Colo., and Montgomery, Ala. Holmes thanked local partners including Southside and GIAC for assisting with the visit.
Holmes said the local GARE meeting will run three days: cultural events on the first day, a full day of sessions with keynotes and breakouts on the second day, and a half-day expo and closing discussion on the third day. She said the steering committee is still confirming venues and that WDIC members will be among the first groups to receive sign-up information.
Holmes also said there will be a pre-meeting virtual primer—described as a “care 101” session—to familiarize attendees with language and norms so participants can engage fully at the in-person meeting.
No formal county funding decisions for the GARE meeting were announced at the WDIC session; Holmes said more details on signing up and local participation will be shared in the coming months.
