The $4,900 donation was presented by Dean, Parks and Recreation staff, who said the money “would just extend that version to be a little bit longer on so we can get through the summer.” Dean described the position as a part‑time seasonal naturalist that typically covers about a month and a half; with the donation the department expects to “double it to about 2, just probably almost 3 months. 3 months they’ll be there.” The committee approved the donation by voice vote; the chair said the motion carried and staff would send a thank‑you letter.
Committee members also accepted a $500 donation from the town highway superintendents association to help pay freight costs for a free day‑long event expected to include about 15 to 20 vendors. The committee approved that donation by voice vote.
In a separate budget transfer, Parks and Recreation requested $3,000 moved from regular services to overtime salaries to cover upcoming storms and hatchery event staffing; members approved the transfer by voice vote.
The committee authorized staff to apply for a community foundation grant. The transcript records a funding figure stated as “CDX 1,000” and discussion identified the amount as $1,000; members approved the application authorization by voice vote.
Dean and other staff also gave brief event and planning updates. Dean said the Maple Festival drew about 147 attendees — “usually we maxed out at 150” — and described attendees touring the property and maple sugaring demonstrations. Staff reminded the committee that Spring Zing is scheduled for May 10 and that the event will start “right at about 09:00 in the morning.”
On planning and capital work at the hatchery, Dean said the department’s first round of applications for hatchery master‑plan improvements did not receive funding despite being ranked high. Dean said planning staff members Ethan Getty and Dave Nelson provided feedback and that the department will continue pursuing improvements focused on the front three ponds and complementary investment in the business center.
