County reports multiple facilities updates; asbestos found in public health windows, new staff hired

County facilities staff updated the Disability Committee March 25 on several building and maintenance projects, saying work is underway across multiple county facilities and that an asbestos issue was identified in the Public Health building.
Staff reported two program counts: the work-order request program at 4,523 and the fleet car request program at 6,031. They described an upstairs renovation at the Soil and Water office to create an office for a grant-funded position, including new carpet, walls and stairs; staff said the work should be complete by the end of the week. Public Health phase 1—new flooring, painting and desks—was reported complete, and phase 2 was scheduled to begin the following week.
During a routine investigation, staff found asbestos within the butyl seal of existing windows at the Public Health facility. Staff said they had reached out to a grant administrator (Janelle) to determine whether remaining grant funds could cover the asbestos abatement so the windows can be removed; absent that funding, the windows would remain in place.
Boardroom renovation work is continuing: air monitoring cleared asbestos and construction resumed, with staff expecting the boardroom to be ready by the May meeting. Staff also said about $200,000 remains from courthouse project funds, which will be applied to steps, drainage improvements on the ring road and other prioritized exterior work. Separately, staff reported they are waiting on a pending MAC DMV grant for a sheriff-related item; approval was expected by the end of the month but dependent on paperwork from the sheriff’s office.
The committee was also told that Lee (longtime county employee) retired Jan. 9 and that Audrey Mahoney started two weeks ago as her replacement and had already begun work in Lee’s former office.
