Votes at a glance: consent agenda approved; board adopts advisory positions on WIAA handbook amendments

The Shoreline School Board carried several routine and advisory actions at its March 18 meeting.

Consent agenda

The board approved the consent agenda (items 6A through 6J) by motion and unanimous vote. Student representatives provided advisory “Aye” votes before the motion. The consent agenda was presented as routine business; board members did not request items be pulled for discussion before the vote.

WIAA handbook advisory positions

The board also approved the district’s advisory positions on a slate of proposed Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) handbook amendments. Vice President Hill and other board members explained staff input and legal context informed the district’s recommendations. The board recommended support for amendments numbered 3, 6, 9, 10, 13 and 16, and recommended opposing amendments 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 14 and 15. Two items drew explicit board attention:

- Amendments 7 and 8: Both would have restricted participation by transgender girls in teams aligned with their gender; the board opposed these amendments and referenced WIAA’s Gender Inclusivity Toolkit (adopted 2007) and the district’s policy positions on inclusion and state law. A board member summarized: the toolkit provides a process for handling complaints and the district supports inclusive participation consistent with that guidance. - Amendment 10: The board supported standardizing pre‑contest practice requirements so middle‑level sports align with high‑school practice requirements; staff told the board the change would correct an oversight from the prior year’s adjustments.

The motion to approve the district’s advisory positions was moved by Director Cohen and seconded by Director Jernigan; the board approved the positions unanimously. Student representatives provided advisory votes in favor before the board action.

What this means

These WIAA positions are advisory input to the regional school board committee and to WIAA’s representative assembly; they do not change local policy or practice directly. Board members said the district’s recommendations were made with access, equity and compliance with state law in mind.
