The Ames City Council approved a request to name the new mini pitch at Lloyd Kurtz Park the ‘‘Friedrich Pitch’’ after Curt and Cindy Friedrich pledged $50,000 toward naming rights.
Parks and Recreation staff said the project is on schedule for late May completion and presented a naming-rights policy that permits major donations to name park features. Staff said the city mailed solicitation letters to 156 businesses and received three bench-sponsor commitments (Central State Bank, DrainTec and Greater Iowa Credit Union) and the Friedrichs’ pledge for naming rights.
Parks staff said the Parks and Recreation Commission reviewed the naming application and recommended approval by a 5–0 vote at its March 27 meeting. Curt Friedrich submitted a short statement supporting the pitch as a healthy activity for children and families. Parks staff recommended council approve the naming under the policy’s ‘‘major donation’’ category.
Council members thanked Curt and Cindy Friedrich for their generosity; the motion to approve the naming carried on roll call.
