Parks staff updated the commission on multiple capital projects and operations: construction progress at the Fitch Family Indoor Aquatic Center, cracking concerns at the ice ribbon at Steven L. Schenker Plaza and the loss of on‑site boat rentals at Ada Hayden for the coming season.
Keith reported the aquatic center’s substantial completion date moved to Jan. 20, 2026; the department now anticipates an opening nearer March 2026. Work is ongoing on roofs, mechanical rooms and pool bases; staff plan an in‑person update to City Council in April for a fuller explanation.
At Schenker Plaza the chiller was started and initial ice freezes were performed, but staff observed cracking and inconsistent ice quality; Terracon and other consultants will take temperature readings and investigate whether inconsistent concrete depth over coolant piping contributed to brittle ice. Staff said further expert review is likely and that opening decisions for the rest of the plaza will await consultant input.
Staff also announced that Jack’s Outdoor Gear (JAX)—which operated boat, canoe and stand‑up paddleboard rentals at Ada Hayden for about 20 years—cannot find seasonal staff this year and will not run the on‑site rental kiosk. JAX will continue to rent boats at its storefront, but on‑site rentals at Ada Hayden will not be available this season. Staff said contactless kiosk systems exist and Story County Conservation uses one at Hicksley Grove, but implementing a kiosk requires capital and staffing not available this year; the department may explore options for 2026.
Staff additionally previewed other project timelines: the mini pitch is expected complete by May 31; an agility course and additional plaza work have staggered schedules; the department is packaging splash pad and park‑facility maintenance bids so funding shifts can be evaluated together.
