Public commenter urges board to resist state-level policing interventions; speaker raises ICE concerns

During the public comment portion of the meeting, Mary McCain urged the board to protect community policing from what she described as intrusive state-level enforcement and criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) practices.
“My concern is with community policing, which is about building long-term relationships... ICE is very much an errant group,” Mary McCain said, describing community policing as relationship-based and saying ICE actions create fear rather than protection. She urged the board and city officials to resist expectations that would undercut community-oriented policing.
Board members acknowledged the comment and used the public comment period to remind staff of outstanding follow-up items. The board chair asked the Police Chief to return at the next meeting with more information about the officer-identifier issue discussed earlier in the agenda so the discussion could continue in a future session.
No formal action resulted from the public comment period.
