Nathaniel Byram, president of the School Lunch Interest Group at International Community School (ICS), told the Lake Washington School District board on March 24 that a student survey and anecdotal evidence show dissatisfaction with current school lunches and asked the district to collaborate with students and nutrition services.
Byram cited a small student survey (37 ICS respondents) in which 78 percent said school lunch was not healthy and 69 percent said they did not enjoy school lunch. He urged the district and vendor Sodexo to work with students to create menus using fresh, local ingredients and age-appropriate recipes.
Byram also shared anonymous student comments: "I used to eat school lunch but notice the decrease in quality in these past 2 years" and "I prefer food from home and I'm vegetarian so there are not a lot of options for me." He offered to share more data with the district and said ICS students would assist in broader data-gathering.
District response: The board heard the comment; no action or commitment to a specific timeline or contract change was made at the meeting. Nutrition services staff were noted as having been contacted by the student group, and the student offered to collaborate on further data collection.
Why it matters: Student nutrition affects daily learning and health. Student requests to be partners in menu design and feedback may be a low-cost way to improve participation and satisfaction.
Next steps: The student group offered to share additional data and to partner with nutrition services; the board requested staff follow-up for a written response or meeting with student representatives.
