Library leaders warn proposed state bills would force large-scale removal of materials, disrupt services

Iowa City Public Library trustees and staff spent the largest portion of their meeting discussing a package of state bills that would narrow or eliminate the obscenity exemption that currently protects public libraries, and could require removing or restricting access to materials across physical and digital collections.

Library leadership said the bills are still evolving in committee but that current drafts could force libraries to review collections at scale. “I don't really see a path forward without closing the building,” the Library Director said, describing the workload of examining every title and the uncertainty about what would meet a new statutory standard. The director said staff had already begun meeting with bill sponsors and city legal staff to explain operational realities.
