During the Iowa City Council work session on Feb. 18, city staff said they would return to council in March or April with a recommendation on reallocating $200,000 within the city's affordable housing distribution model for the FY2026 budget.
Staff described the prior use of the funds for Low‑Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) support but said the forthcoming recommendation probably will not continue that use and will propose a different prioritization approach. No formal vote or budget appropriation occurred at the work session; staff framed the item as a proposed reallocation that would come back for council approval.
A councilmember asked whether groups that have previously advocated — including the Affordable Housing Coalition and Housing Fellowship — had provided guidance on how the funds should be used; staff said they had not had those conversations. Council discussion did not produce a final decision and left the matter pending staff recommendation.
Action: staff to prepare and present a recommendation on how to reallocate the $200,000 for council consideration in March or April; no final action taken at the Feb. 18 work session.
