A representative of the University of Iowa Student Government updated the Iowa City Council at the Feb. 18 work session on recent student government activity including campus prairie restoration, a planned increase in tree plantings and this year’s Dance Marathon fundraising total.
The USG representative said the student senate recently passed a resolution promoting restoration of native prairies and native prairie plants on campus acreage. The USG Sustainability Committee typically plants one tree per year; this year, the administration has discussed increasing that number and USG representatives said they are “currently in talks” about planting perhaps 100 trees, though the site and final plan were not yet determined.
The representative also reported that this year’s Dance Marathon — the university’s annual pediatric cancer fundraiser — raised around $37,000,000. She said the Student Government contributed $20,000 from USG reserves to the event. No additional details about planting locations or funding sources for the tree initiative were given during the update.
