Commission member named to comprehensive plan steering committee; staff plan public engagement

City staff told the Climate Action Commission that the City of Iowa City will update its comprehensive plan this year and invited the commission to participate in the steering committee. Angie, a commission member who will serve on the committee, will report back to the commission to keep members informed.
Sarah Gardner summarized the comprehensive plan’s role as a land-use guidance document that informs later zoning decisions and noted the city updates the plan roughly every 10 years. “A comprehensive plan is essentially a land use plan for the city that helps guide future growth and development,” Gardner said. She said the Climate Action Commission’s representative will help ensure climate priorities are considered and then report developments to the commission.
Angie said the steering committee had its first meeting and described the membership: two city council members (Josh Moe and Megan Alter), planning and zoning commissioners, and a cross-section of community stakeholders including affordable housing representatives and developers. She described the committee’s early focus on collecting stakeholder and public input, drafting goals and preparing a plan followed by a public adoption process; staff said the process will take more than a year.
Staff said they will identify portions of the existing climate action plan that align with the comprehensive plan so those elements can be pulled forward. Staff urged commissioners to attend public forums during the engagement period if they wish to comment.
