Cedar Rapids City Council adopted a resolution March 25 to advance a $190,000 transit‑stop improvements project that will add or improve boarding pads at 11 bus stops across the city, install four benches and four solar‑lit shelters where warranted, and upgrade ramps and ADA access where needed.
Public Works project manager Ben Morrill told council the locations were identified by CR Transit for ADA improvements. The shelters will include solar lighting, and contractors will be limited to disturbing any single stop for no more than 14 calendar days to minimize rider disruption. Bid opening was scheduled for the day after the hearing; construction is planned through September 2025.
During public comment, transit user Isaac Davis praised the investment and urged continued work to increase route flexibility, frequency and broader investment in transit to boost ridership and community health. Councilmembers thanked staff and cited the transit improvements as relatively high value for the cost.
Council approved the resolution on a voice vote. Staff noted some shelter installations may incorporate public‑art elements funded through a separate ARPA grant referenced in the project materials.
