The Missoula County Commission approved a tax-abatement application on March 18 for qualifying class 8 manufacturing machinery and equipment submitted by UFP Edge LLC.
Sam Scott of the Missoula County Clerk and Recorder’s Office explained the state legislature in 2023 authorized property-tax reductions for certain class 8 manufacturing machinery, fixtures and equipment. Applicants must apply by March 1 for equipment placed into service by January 1 of the application year.
UFP Edge LLC submitted an application reporting equipment placed into service with a total market value of $1,517,025. Under County Policy 24-1, the statutory first $1,000,000 of qualifying property receives the legislated abatement, and the county applies an abatement rate set by policy for qualifying value above the first million. County staff recommended an 80% abatement on the qualifying portion above $1,000,000; that is the portion of the applicant’s equipment market value above the $1,000,000 threshold (approximately $517,025 as reported by the applicant).
Commissioners approved the application by motion and second, with the approval expressly conditioned on the Montana Department of Revenue determining which items in the application qualify as class 8 property under state law. The county’s action per its policy is ministerial and contingent on the state’s final determination.
