Students and staff honored: Heart challenge, awards and upcoming prom boutique highlighted

The board recognized Fort Zumwalt’s ongoing partnership with the American Heart Association and the district’s performance in the Kids Heart Challenge, including district fundraising and CPR training totals.
Cheryl Schneckgoecki, school engagement director for the American Heart Association, told the board the district raised more than $179,000 last year and that 453 families were trained in hands‑only CPR. She introduced Sherry Palmer of Progress South, which raised more than $30,000 and was identified as the top school in the state for the program. "So Sherry, I am very proud. I would like to give you this award," Schneckgoecki said.
The board and staff also recognized Mason Lake, a Lewis and Clark student who the presenter said was the top student fundraiser in the state, and arranged a group photo with district principals.
Board members used their time to offer several separate recognitions: Jeff Marion noted National School Counselor Appreciation Week and congratulated Tim Grimes on a Hall of Fame induction; another board member highlighted the prom boutique scheduled Feb. 7 (2:30–7 p.m.) and invited donations of formalwear; Miss Byrd and others congratulated theater students and Catherine Finsky, a band director recently inducted into the Band World Legion of Honor; and a teacher, Rebecca Van Sant of West Middle School, was named a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching recipient and will receive a $10,000 award and a Washington, D.C., trip.
The board also announced that candidate filings for upcoming board elections closed and that four candidates will appear on the ballot in April; the board said biographical information will be posted on the district website.
