District receives $45,464 energy rebate; staff outline HVAC and lighting projects

Moorhead Public Service presented Moorhead Area Public Schools with a $45,464 energy rebate on March 24 to reimburse energy‑efficiency work connected to the district’s new high school.
Steve Moore (district staff) introduced the presentation and said the check would go into the district’s general fund to offset utility bills. “This is a significant check that goes, of course, into our general fund and helps us will help fund our utility bill for this year,” Moore said. He then introduced Travis Schmidt, general manager of Moorhead Public Service, who said the payment was coordinated through Missouri River Energy Services’ energy rebate program.
Moore described planned efficiency projects the district expects to pursue: two HVAC control projects (at Dodge and Horizon West) with estimated paybacks under one year and combined annual savings of roughly $25,000–$26,000 per project; a proposed FY‑26 capital LTFM lighting retrofit at Horizon East that would replace 2,318 fixtures with an estimated $38,000 in annual utility savings and roughly $18,000 in annual operations and maintenance savings from reduced lamp and ballast replacement.
Schmidt said the rebate presented was a partial payment because construction at the high school remained underway. Board members thanked staff and the utility for support; no formal action was required for the presentation.
Administration said staff will return with a full report on energy projects and planned capital requests as part of the FY‑26 LTFM program.
