A board member asked about the professional teaching internships listed on the personnel report; staff explained the program pairs winter graduates with classroom assignments four days a week and one day of professional learning with graduate credit opportunities.
Staff employment (conflict-of-interest policy 210): The board voted to approve Andrea Van Geller’s continued employment with the district as an accompanist for Wilson Elementary School. Superintendent Mr. Elstad said Policy 210 requires board approval when a board member is employed by the district and noted Van Geller’s earnings are below the statutory $20,000 threshold. The motion passed unanimously.
Extended trip: The board approved an extended trip request for the Owatonna High School robotics team to attend a Colorado regional competition that will require students to miss three school days. The board voted unanimously.
Superintendent search: The board voted unanimously to initiate a superintendent search by conducting an internal application process; initial interviews were scheduled for Feb. 13 with follow-ups the week of Feb. 17.
Gifts: The board approved a resolution accepting gifts and donations totaling nearly $170,000, including a $50,000 installment from the 761 Foundation toward the Foundation Room and roughly $110,000 in annual grants distributed to instructors for innovative programs. The motion passed 7–0.
