Committee hears resolution supporting Ohio’s Semiquincentennial commission and local events

The House Government Oversight Committee heard sponsor testimony on House Concurrent Resolution 6 on April 9, a nonbinding resolution expressing support for the Ohio Semiquincentennial Commission and the state’s planned 250th anniversary activities.
Representative Joe Miller and Representative Rhett Holmes (joint sponsors) described the commission’s county-focused grant approach and highlighted local examples of planned programming, including theater events in Akron, an Ohio Buckeye historic train tour, aviation-related trails and exhibits, and a Cincinnati riverboat rally scheduled for fall 2025. "The goal is to amplify local efforts and to have this initiative bring people together to celebrate Ohio's accomplishments," Representative Miller said.
Sponsors said the commission plans to use state funds largely for grants, matching funds and marketing to support locally led events rather than centralizing programming. They told the committee the commission has coordinated with state tourism officials and other governor’s office staff and that Todd Pysmith is the commission’s national point of contact.
No committee vote was held. Sponsors encouraged local leaders to take part in planning and said they would provide requested materials, such as the commission's planning report, to the committee.
