County approves CIP amendment to buy larvicide sprayer for mosquito control

Flathead County on Jan. 30 approved a CIP amendment to purchase a larvicide sprayer system for the Mosquito Control District, an investment county staff estimated at about $7,000.
Brock Bull, lead technician for the Mosquito Control District, told commissioners the county currently monitors about 1,653 larviciding sites on roughly a two-week cycle. He said a mounted sprayer that fits in the bed of the district’s Polaris Ranger would speed treatments, reduce walking and the associated injury risk, and cut product waste from over-application.
Bull said districts in other parts of Montana that adopted similar equipment reduced treatment time “down a tenth,” producing product and labor savings. Commissioners discussed that the county’s CIP already includes adulticide foggers and that the larviciding system is distinct from those previously budgeted items.
A commissioner moved and another seconded the CIP amendment. Commissioners approved the amendment by voice vote. The motion record at the meeting lists the estimated cost of $7,000; staff did not provide a formal vendor at the meeting.
Planning and public-health staff will proceed with procurement and specifications consistent with the approved CIP amendment.
