Flathead County adopts road load limits as spring frost thaws

Flathead County Commissioners on Feb. 26 adopted Resolution 26-30 to establish countywide road load limits for 2025 after Road Department staff reported frost-related damage to the roadway network.

Dave Frontier, a Flathead County Road Department employee, told commissioners the department was seeing “boils coming up, distress on the roadways, rutting” and recommended moving forward immediately rather than waiting until the next scheduled meeting. “I am seeing something I've never seen in my 18 years at the road department,” Frontier said.

Frontier said crews were prepared to deploy signs the following morning at 7:30 a.m. and that by the end of that day the county would be “under restrictions,” with motor carrier services to be notified of the new limits.

A commissioner moved to adopt Resolution 26-30, which was seconded and approved by voice vote. Commissioners recorded two "aye" votes and no opposition was recorded on the audio transcript; the motion carried.

The action directs the Road Department to post load-limit signage and notify affected carriers; no funding amounts, duration for the limits, or specific weight thresholds were detailed in the public remarks recorded in the meeting.
