Rye Brook trustees approve two DPW hires and a conditional police appointment

The Village of Rye Brook Board of Trustees on Feb. 25 approved three personnel resolutions to fill field and public-safety vacancies.
Ralph DeRosa of Highview Avenue and Anthony Tufo of Arthur Lane were conditionally appointed to laborer positions in the Department of Public Works, and Avery Tompkins of Yorktown was conditionally appointed to a police officer position, the board said. The appointments are conditional on civil service procedures; the DeRosa appointment was noted as not requiring a medical exam because he is currently an employee.
Chris (village administrator) read the three resolutions at the start of the meeting and asked for motions; the board voted on the resolutions by roll call. Trustee Fisher, Trustee Heizer and Trustee Merlino all voted “yes,” as did Mayor Klein.
The board discussed the hires briefly, with Mayor Klein praising the public works and parks staff and saying the appointments reflect a rigorous process and will help keep village services running smoothly. Chris noted that Tompkins’ police appointment is the initial step in a multi-stage hiring process for law enforcement and an opportunity for the board to meet the officer at a future date.
The hires carry the following compensation and dates as read into the record: DeRosa, annual salary listed as $74,045.10 with an effective start date of Feb. 26, 2025; Tufo, annual salary listed as $60,006.85 with an effective start date of Feb. 27, 2025; Tompkins, annual salary read as approximately $64,069.60 with an estimated start date of March 26, 2025. The resolutions stated the appointments remain subject to state civil service procedures and any other conditions listed in offer letters.
Trustees and staff welcomed the new hires and invited them to join the board for a photograph after the vote.
