Beaman Middle School robotics teams win awards, send two teams to world championships

Beaman Middle School students and staff presented district highlights at the April 8 school board meeting, showcasing the Beaman Robotics program’s season and awards. Aaron Scholes, the Beaman innovation coach, said the program has grown rapidly: “This year… all 9 of Beaman’s teams made it to state,” Scholes told the board, noting two teams qualified for world competition for the first time in the program’s third year.
Students described season highlights from regionals, state and invitation-only events. Arjun of team 99088A said, “Our season highlight was at States when we won our very first award, the Energy Award.” Other students described awards for sportsmanship and design, semifinals placements and a teams’ experience making alliances at matches.
Scholes and students credited high school mentors — some paid and some volunteers — with helping middle school teams grow their skills. Several students said competing with older teams at state events helped them improve and gain confidence. The board chair and members congratulated the students and teacher, and wished the teams luck at upcoming world competitions.
The presentation emphasized program growth: from a few awards in the program’s first year to 21 awards districtwide this season, two invite-only appearances and two teams advancing to world competition. Several students noted plans to continue in robotics after middle school and join the district’s high school robotics program.
