Port Jervis Polar Plunge draws record participation, volunteer organizers say

Tim Simmons, of Port Jervis' fourth Ward, told the City Council during public comment that the sixth annual Polar Plunge drew what he called record participation: 69 people entered the water and organizers reported the largest crowd of supporters in the event's six-year history.
Simmons praised the Port Jervis special operations team, the fire department, recreation department staff and volunteers who helped set up, register participants and keep the beach and safety equipment ready. He singled out long-running volunteer organizer Chip Estenas and three special-operations chiefs — Keith Brown, Tony Fuller and Jeff Lewis — for praise.
Simmons also thanked municipal staff who assisted with signage and safety, local emergency-medical personnel who stood by, and volunteers who handled fundraising and logistics. He said the event depends on local businesses and sponsors and urged residents to patronize those who supported the plunge.
Simmons said the organizers hope to expand the event next year. No city funding decisions or formal council action on the event were recorded during the meeting.
