Somersets economic development officer outlined plans for 2025 that center on business retention and expansion (BR&E) visits, three forthcoming business-connection events and marketing and workforce initiatives intended to support local companies.
The officer said staff have discussed program goals, methodologies for tracking success, and data collection. Upcoming events listed in the packet include a manufacturing/technology session with Pete Nance (noted as traveling from Mitchell), a Build Dakota visit anticipated in March and a South Dakota Trade visit in April, all hosted in Somerset. The packet also referenced outreach to the Small Business Administration for a restaurant expansion and efforts to help a local coffee shop become an anchor tenant in a small retail park.
Other items included a rural circuit concept for the county, social-media and marketing material development (including a one-sheet for SEDC and the EDOs role), and partnerships with regional groups such as the Rushmore Regional Alliance. The officer noted workforce assistance for a local business seeking four full-time hires using Department of Labor resources and helped with job descriptions and applicant recruitment.
Staff invited council members to attend business-connection events and said more details would be provided as plans finalize.
