The Canton City Commission opened a public hearing and approved a motion for a first reading of an ordinance that would amend Chapter 3.02 (urban reserve conditional uses), Chapter 4.02 (residential conditional uses) and Chapter 11.11 (site-built single-family and multifamily dwelling standards) of the city's zoning regulations to address "Shouse" uses.
The planning and zoning board held a hearing on Dec. 30, 2024, and recommended approval of the ordinance, Mayor/Chair (unnamed) said as the commission presented the ordinance and opened the public hearing. The ordinance, if approved on second reading, would be published Feb. 3 and take effect March 5, the commission said.
The purpose of the hearing was to present the proposed changes to the public and receive comment. No members of the public identified themselves as proponents or opponents during the hearing, and the public hearing was closed with no testimony recorded.
After closing public testimony, the commission "entertained a motion for a first reading"; a motion was made and the first-reading motion moved forward. The commission did not discuss conflicts of interest related to the item, and no commissioner announced an abstention.
The ordinance and the cited chapters were described on the record as amendments to the city's zoning regulations; specific ordinance number and detailed text were not provided in the hearing record. The commission stated that the planning and zoning board recommended approval following its Dec. 30, 2024, hearing.
The commission will consider a second reading at a later meeting; publication and an effective date were announced as part of the first-reading procedural notice.
