The Barrington Town Council voted 5-0 to establish an ad hoc committee to plan celebrations and programming tied to Rhode Island’s 250th anniversary. The resolution calls for a small committee of appointed volunteers to work with historical societies, neighboring towns and the state commission.
The town manager said preservation groups were interested but could not shoulder all planning, and the council added representatives from the Preservation Society and the Economic Development Commission to the proposed membership. Lauren Fogarty from the Rhode Island semi‑quincentennial office addressed the council and described available state resources, regional coordination opportunities and a donation of a red maple (a commemorative tree) for the town.
Councilors said the committee should be small to remain efficient but expect volunteer interest to grow as the anniversary nears; appointments will be made after the council advertises openings.
The resolution passed unanimously and the town clerk will advertise for members.
