School official says 91 open-enrollment applications received; warns district could lose $750,000 if levy fails

Kroll said the open-enrollment application period closes the next day and that the district had received 91 applications: 64 students had been accepted and 18 were awaiting review. “To be honest, we were anticipating a possible 75 applicants,” Kroll said, adding that the numbers show families are interested in the district’s programs.
Kroll said the district receives approximately $1,900 per accepted open-enrollment student. She described the levy on the ballot as a no-new-tax renewal and said the state of Ohio’s 20-mill floor affects how the levy operates: if the renewal fails, the district would not see a reduction in taxes for residents but would lose roughly $750,000 per year in revenue. Kroll urged residents to consult Treasurer Shearhart or Superintendent Calares for specific budget questions and announced a special school board meeting on April 22 to answer community questions about the levy.
Kroll also said the district is not using open enrollment as an athletic recruiting tool and noted that staff are not asking applicants about athletic status; she said the district’s focus is academic performance. She encouraged residents to attend the joint state of the city and schools event and the school’s special meeting about the levy.
